Its in their pocket!
Living life mobile is easy to say, easy to type, easy to think ... but is it easy to DO? I say the answer is yes. Think of the great inventions that the world has introduced ... and what would you say are the most important inventions to man kind?
Would you say the light bulb? The wheel? Fire? All those are GREAT additions and inventions to our lifestyles and they each have had their part in shaping our future. Now think modern day ... what do people consider "sacred ground?" Follow me here, I am sure there are many different opinions, but I would go so far to say that the most effective inventions are the ones that people NEED to have with them daily. The inventions that people double check to make sure they have everytime they move. I am talking the inventions that people carry with them in their "personal space!" The POCKETS!!! There are many inventions that help people - however the REALLY smart inventor gets into the pocket of the consumer!!! Give them something they need to have with them to make their lives easier! That is what we are all about.
The lock was invented, so people carry keys. I would consider that to be a solid invention. What about a device to tell time? People dont carry watches around in their pockets anymore (they use to) ... but none the less, watches are something people will allow to be carried. Another would be the wallet - people carry it to hold identification, money, pictures. The invention of the wallet gave people something to neatly store all those needed items. Another GREAT invention that people will never leave home without, and if they do, well you know how that feels. Medicines come in packages that fit easily into your pocket, companies made calculators that fit in your pocket, shoot, insurance agents put callendars on the back of business cards so you keep their card in your wallet. If you can get into the pocket of the customer, then every time that customer feels that product they think of you!
The most recent invention that made it into the pockets of consumers was what? The Cell Phone or Mobile Device (TREO, Blackberry, PDA's) ... you know what I am talking about. In this day and age the cell phone is beginning to give the wallet a run for its money (no pun intended)! Think about it, the only reason you need a wallet now is to carry money. Which, in Europe and Asia, there are companies emerging that are bringing payment capabilities to the new cell phones being manufactured. This means that Keys, Wallets and Watches are slowly being adopted into ONE SINGLE item.
So, if you were a business owner, and someone said to you ... I have a way to get your companies name into peoples pockets! I can help you target that ONE person you have not been able to connect with! Would you listen?
SMS Technology and Cell Phone technology is quickly becoming the new form of communication here in America. Give it a try ... you'll find out its not as scary as it seems. Remember when email was first introduced to the world by AOL and Delphi back in 1993? How long did you hear people say "what on earth do I need an email address for?" Think about that when you hear people say - "I dont know how to text message"
Now - Go Live Life Mobile!
P.S. - I would like to thank my friend Jim Jorgensen for keying my thinking into the "In the pocket" way of looking at marketing.
